Subtitled "A Guide to Grinding, Smoothing, and Polishing Blown and Fused Glass", this is almost the only book we know of which is devoted specifically to coldworking. Schmuck defines coldworking as the manipulation and alteration of glass without the addition of heat - that is, changing the form and surface via some sort of mechanical or hand-manipluated method. After an introduction to coldworking, and a chapter of related safety issues, Schmuck provides a comprehensive discussion of the tools and techniques relating to coldworking. These include: the saw; the wet belt sander; the lapping wheel; the polisher; the sandblaster; the lathe; power tools; the hand engraver; drilling; hand lapping; the rociprolap; fire polishing; working with acid; and a final section on miscellaneous apparatus. At the end of the book, there is a delightful one page section entitled "The Last Word" in which Schmuck explains that his German originating surname rhymes with "book", unlike the Yiddish word "Shmuck" which rhymes with "truck" ...
