If you’d rather develop some muscles in your arms, work off some frustrations AND save money, you can, of course, make your own frit.
The smoosher (glass crusher, frit maker, destroyer of glass) is basically a welded steel box, with a plunger which fits neatly inside. To make frit, you simply put (cleaned) pieces of glass in the bottom of the box and (wearing safety glasses and a mask) hit it with the plunger until the frit is the size you want. You then need to use a high strength magnet, which you run over the frit to remove any little metal chips which may be caught in the frit.
The smoosher is Australian made, sturdy and does the job extremely well. Best of all, it is relatively inexpensive. We have recently upgraded the thickness of steel in the crushing box, the old steel was holding up well, but the latest version should last longer than you, and if the bottom plate wears out it is easier to replace.
Having used the smoosher to make your frit, now you can sieve the frit to the level required - coarse, medium, fine or powder. We also sell a Frit Sorting Set and some Rare Earth Magnets to finish the process.
This is an ugly, heavy, strong as possible frit making machine and we take no time at all to make them pretty to keep the costs down - but you can paint them with metal appropriate paint if wanted (but please not the inside surfaces - you'll end up with paint coloured frit)
