Current ETA as at 26/10/2021 - 3 weeks
While the current restrictions on travel are in place we have decided to make the DIY kiln course available for those who can't make the trip to Canberra, and feel like they are up to building one solo.
We will prepare all the normal materials, controller box and elements and ship everything to you on a pallet to your nearest depot (some parts will ship by Auspost to minimise shipping costs).
Estimated shipping prices are around $80 to Brisbane and Melbourne, $120 to Perth and Darwin.. they aren't horrendous.
There is a video series to follow along with, plus you get diagrams, written instructions etc.

Key features:
Chamber size 440 mm x 440 mm x 190 mm – (37 litres). Comfortably takes a 400mm x 400mm shelf (not included).
Operates on a standard household power point - 240V AC 10 amps.
Designed temperature range 650° ~ 850 °C – perfect for warm glass. Maxiumum temperature 1050°C. All refractories are rated to at least 1100°C.
Fully enclosed in a solid stainless steel box for incredible strength. These kilns can even shipped on a small pallet without any need for external protective packaging.
Multiple insulation layers reduces firing costs (equivalent to 15cm of fire brick) compared with most designs at 7cm.
Square interior.
Fully complies with Australian Safety standards – i.e. power cuts off when lid opened – unlike a number of imported models. If you are working in the kiln when it is hot, you don’t need to worry about electrocuting yourself.
A commercially built kiln of this size would normally cost you in the vicinity of $3000.
One person can assemble or build the kiln, although you may benefit from an extra pair of hands and it should be a fun time to drag someone else along too.
To build a kiln, you need relatively basic skills – Nothing that has been beyond anyone who has taken the course so far:
Do some fine cutting/adjusting of pre-machined bricks and boards.
Rivet body together.
Fit element into bricks.
Attach fibre to lid.
Fit handle and hinges on lid.
Attach cut-out mechanism to lid.
Attach controller to body.

Here You will need to arrange an electrician to attend your studio to make the final electrical connections.
Much like the normal "build with us" course, this package can also come without a controller box if you already have a suitable controlling system, and the price reduces to $1300.
